DROPS Inspections

Safety has remained the number one priority in the Oil & Gas Industry, and in keeping with industry directives, OCS has developed and successfully implemented ‘DROPS’ prevention schemes on many land and offshore drilling units. This ensures safety policies meet both IADC HSE Guidelines Section 16 for “Dropped Objects” and API Recommended Practices Section 4G & 54 for Derricks/Masts and has streamlined the management and implementation of a dropped objects policy and procedure.

‘DROPS’ is an industry-wide initiative focused on preventing dropped objects, with the ultimate goal of delivering a second nature dropped objects prevention strategy across our industry. ‘Drops’ is represented by a large number of operators, contractors and service companies along with several leading industry bodies.

OCS, utilizing the ‘DROPS’ scheme can implement and ensure a streamlined management of a previous or new dropped objects policy and procedure. OCS ensures all policies meet;

  • IADC HSE Guidelines for “Dropped Objects” and
  • API Recommended Practices Section 4G & 54 for Derricks/Masts

Advantages of Using the OCS Dropped Objects Program

  • Generate a full dropped objects register including;
    • Equipment
    • Fastening Methods
    • Photographs
  • Issue a detailed report, including;
    • Recommendations
    • Corrective Actions
  • Automatic check lists generated for daily, weekly, monthly and yearly internal inspections
  • Executive summary dashboard report that measures the effectiveness of your dropped objects policy
  • Compare each rig’s safety performance by location, manager, or operating company
  • Online management program and reporting system available for holistic trending analysis.

In establishing an effective dropped object management system, facilities, structures, sites and locations are typically separated into several more manageable areas. Within these areas major structures are separated further to represent levels, equipment areas and modules. For each area, an inventory is prepared detailing and uniquely referencing all equipment that is located, stored, held, mounted, secured or used at height.

This represents all the potential dropped objects in that area and the inventory can run to many hundreds of items, depending on the Zone being surveyed. Because of the shear number of items without an effective method this process is extremely difficult to maintain and ensure compliance with industry and company requirements.

OCS provides competent inspectors to undertake a thorough ‘DROPS” survey of the mast, derrick and adjoining contingent areas. During this time detailed reports with supportive written, referenced and photographic documentation with full recommendations for remedial repair and or replacement and recertification is compiled and prepared.
