Chemical Engineer

The Role

The engineer primary role is handling process studies and design modifications in utilities, gas treatment, NGL recovery or gas compression facilities. You will oversee the monitoring of assigned specialty chemical plant operations for optimized, safe and environmentally compliant operation. Occasionally called upon to design or evaluate new process installations or modifications. You must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in major projects preferably in the Oil & Gas, Semiconductors, Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, Power Generation industries.


  • Monitor, analyze & optimize daily process parameters and KPIs.
  • Monitor existing chemical plant operating units.
  • Report on Unit operation and make optimization recommendations.
  • Troubleshoot problems on assigned units.
  • Review chemical programs to assure the chemicals are being used properly and achieving the program’s purpose.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies, catalysts, and chemicals.
  • Work with Maintenance to assure that vessels are adequately cleaned, internals installed correctly, and the catalyst is loaded properly.
  • Make orifice calculations, size control valves, pumps and heat exchangers.
  • Perform process design work as required.
  • Serve as Project Sponsor or Project Manager as required.
  • Make studies to identify constraints and eliminate bottlenecks in various operating equipment.
  • Make use of process simulators, ChemCad, to rate, size and evaluate the performance of chemical processes.
  • Perform economic evaluations as needed.
  • Act as a Project Manager for new capital projects by providing process design basis and specifications for revamping and new projects as requested
  • Support environmental compliance by evaluating data and studies as required.
  • Perform various tasks that might be assigned by the Production Manager or Plant Manager.
  • Provide troubleshooting recommendations for any process abnormalities.
  • Identify any operations optimization opportunities and recommend solutions.
  • Develop process related design packages and participate in the review of other discipline packages.
  • Mentor and develop young engineers.
  • Write technical reports and present technical studies.
  • Conduct and review HAZOP and SIL studies.
  • Develop simulation cases for operating units.
  • Participate in developing isolation plans, job risk analysis, shutdown and startup procedures.
  • Assist in engineering analysis, development, design and control of assigned studies.
  • Work with the plant teams to troubleshoot issues & upsets, and participate in investigations.
  • Check the plant performance to ensure it is running up to its design as well as optimum profilePrepare Systems and Mechanical Completion Certificates

    • A valid state driver’s license – Preferred
    • Forklift, Clamp-truck- Fork-Truck Certified – Preferred
    • Degree – Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering – REQUIRED
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) – Required
  • Computer proficiency: The candidate must have primary knowledge of:
    • Strong ability with simulation programs including;
      • Hysys, Flarenet, and ProMax, ChemCad
    • Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Project, and Access
      • Ability to sort, categorize, and interpret data
    • Excellent written and verbal communication.
      • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients, and other employees or the organization.
      • Possesses the ability to work with and communicate with all levels of management to secure cooperation for performing maintenance, repairs, and alteration
    • You must have have the skills of troubleshooting, root cause analysis, debottlenecking, and process hazard analysis (PHA)
    • Possess strong knowledge of construction, quality, testing, pre-commissioning and commissioning turnover practices
    • Experience in managing a team would be advantageous
    • Demonstrated Industrial Construction experience
    • Ability to work accurately and methodically under pressure and strict deadlines
    • Strong demonstrable communication style and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to influence and negotiate both internally and externally with an open and inclusive style
    • A keen eye for the detail of specific tasks, combined with an understanding of how such specifics fit in with the project as a whole Organizational, project management and planning skills, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks
    • Excellent time and cost management skills in order to plan and achieve delivery to the desired quality to exceed customer expectations
